7 mind blowing packaging designs from Europe

Among advertising awards, I find Epica Awards fascinating because it showcases work which is not normally featured in popular ad blogs. The Epica awards were created in 1987 and celebrate their 25th anniversary this year.

According to the website: Epica’s aim is to reward outstanding creativity and help communication agencies, film production companies, media consultancies, photographers and design studios to develop their reputations across Europe and the EMEA region. Aside from UK one gets to see great work from Germany, Finland, France, Israel and even Lithuania.

Aside from the great work in regular categories like Television, Radio, Print and Outdoor there were some great ideas in Packaging. Here are a few:

1. Festina Profundo, “The Diver’s Watch in Water Packaging

What better way to showcase that Festina Profundo is a water proof watch than to create a packaging that lets the watch float in water?Evoked a ‘wish I had thought of this’ reaction in me.

Agency: Scholz & Friends

2. The Deli Garage,  ‘Brickstones’

Description from the award entry: Brickstones – the world’s first cake mix in miniature cement bags. Instead of muffins, cupcakes or donuts, bricks are now served on the table. The six cake moulds for the brickstones let cooks create delicious cake structures.

Agency: Kolle Rebbe / KOREFE (Hamburg, Germany)

3. The Deli Garage, “Food Paint Shop

Description from the award entry: Develop packaging design for the four different Food Finish colours in cans, with which creative cooks can spray paint their meals and dishes. The Paint Shop is Food Finish mini-confectionery made specially for your own spray colouring ideas. Use the perforated stencils to liven up any type of delicacy with food colouring. Available in gold, silver, blue and red.

Agency: Kolle Rebbe / KOREFE (Hamburg, Germany)

 4. The Deli Garage, ‘Parmesan Pencils’

Description from the award entry: Take the Parmesan Pencil, sharpen it using the enclosed sharpener, and you have delicious, fresh Parmesan cheese on your meal. There couldn’t be an easier way to decorate your pasta. And the packaging also plays a central role: Using a scale on the pens and on the back of the packaging, it’s not only easy to tell how much grated Parmesan Pencil you need for each dish, you can even see how many calories each serving contains. So kitchen craftsmen have everything perfectly under control.

5. Görtz 17 Shoelace Box
Description from the award entry: To boost the sales of a stylish shoe that’s already a cult product, we created new packaging that made the brand even more desirable in terms of look and functionality: The first recyclable shoebox that makes the platsic bag unnecessary. Its minimalist design draws attention to the handles, which can be removed and used as an extra pair of shoelaces. The series consists of five colour-coordinated designs that match perfectly with Görtz 17’s Converse Collection.
Agency: kempertrautmann gmbh, Hamburg / loved gmbh, Hamburg

6. EcoBag

Description from the award entry: Meet the brand-new shopping bag which is not just nature-friendly… but pure nature itself! The average person throws away about 300 plastic and paper bags per year. Most plastic bags will end up in a landfill decomposing for centuries (it takes up to 1,000 years in general). What if we turned the troublesome product into an ecological one? The paper of the EcoBag contains built-in seeds of various plants. Wherever you throw it away, it will disintegrate after rain and turn into a small lawn of grass, camomile or clover.

Agency: Depot WPF (Moscow)

7. Kohberg, “Support the Breasts

Description from the award entry: Kohberg, the largest maufacturer of bread in Denmark, is the proud sponsor of The Danish Cancer Society in their big annual event to fight breast cancer. The event is called ‘Support the breasts’ and Kohberg donates part of the revenue generated from sales of rye bread buns.

Agency: envision

I thought the ‘watch in a water pouch’ idea and the Ecobag were absolutely brilliant. Which ones were your favorites?
