What do you do when you are launching an updated version of a car brand? You may have a story in new engines, better upholstery and more safety features. But if you are a legendary brand like Volkswagen Golf, it helps to take the argument to a new level.
On paper a thought like ‘we are our own competition’ sounds pompous. While the task was to ‘outdo ourselves’ the genesis of this interesting commercial seems to be a Planning input (could very well have come from the Creative guys!): Sometimes the only one you have to beat is yourself. And that perspective seems to have helped this commercial.
