I don’t remember liking that Indigo Airlines font the first time I saw it. I did not think it had a premium feel to it; I was unfair perhaps, since I formed an opinion without flying the airline. Over the years, their advertising has had its effect on me, mainly driven by the smile inducing one liners. That cheeky tone of voice had an effect on me and I overcame my dislike for that font.…
Agency: McCann As expected, Dumb Ways to Die, created for Melbourne Metro, won big at Cannes Lions, 2013. It gained traction as a YouTube video that went viral (5omn views as of date) has grown to embrace virtually all the new media platforms. There is even an iPad & iPhone app which furthers the proposition into an engaging game. The campaign elements included a microsite, a Tumblr, an official song available for purchase and of course,…
Among the print entries for Cannes Lions this year from India, this campaign was a stand out for me. Agency: Cheil [Click on the images for a hi-res version] I guess it works because of the minimal approach and the double-take that a reader is likely to experience after noticing the same event across different places and time zones. Clever way to dramatise the 3G/4G +WiFi feature of the camera.
I remember seeing the ads for Red Rock Cider, during the late 90s in the agency conference room. Remember laughing out loud. Starring Leslie Nielsen and based on Police Squad! the ads were a laugh riot with gags and puns galore. Aside from “It’s not red, and there’s no rocks in it” I also remember ‘Chicks are all over him’ and ‘I am on the case chief’. Fun, whacked out stuff this.
Clever visual idea and art direction in these ads to promote the ‘power of print magazines’ in the US. As with these set of ads, the viewer interacts with every element of the ad, in fact every word. And the use of relevant magazine titles to complete a sentence is clever. You like?
These ads for ‘Art classes for kids’ worked for me because the viewer interacts with virtually every element of the ad. And what’s more it brings a smile, gets the point across. Though Picasso wouldn’t have been thrilled to see his work ‘dissected’ like this. [Click on the images for hi-res files] Agency: LOWE/SSP3, Bogota, Colombia. Via.
Agency: BBDO, New York Director: Simon West This classic Super Bowl commercial from 1995 has everything going for it to make a great TV commercial: a visually engaging idea, a simple compelling story with a twist and the product right at the centre of it all. ‘Mom, he’s done it again!’ was a killer. Classic. Memorable. Timeless. And won Gold at Films Lions in Cannes.
The moment I finished watching the new film, Our Signature, from Apple my heart sank a little. It has all the nice things in it, the right things, of how Apple makes our lives better. A sweet pleasant film. But will I watch it again? I doubt it. I doubt if many people will. My first thought was “Oh God, they have made a corporate film”. And that thought was nailed by the last frame…
Apple made several announcements at the WWDC yesterday: a new MacBook Air, radical new design for Mac Pro, new Airport Extreme base station and Time Capsule, an update to OS X with several new features, iTunes Radio and the most anticipated, iOS7. But not surprisingly, the world’s attention is on iOS7. And the reviews are polarising: some viscerally hate the new design while others love it. My take on the event and some of the…
Aside from the big product announcements, Apple unveiled a new advertising theme yesterday at the WWDC: Designed by Apple in California. It is reminiscent of the ‘Think Different’ ads at least in the role its meant to play. I feel it is meant to reiterate Apple’s approach to business – that its all about the experience of a product. And that they are engineers and artists…craftsmen and inventors. It fulfils a dual role: makes current…
