Google India continues with its leadership-stance enhancing initiatives: Helping Women Get Online will focus on creating awareness about the benefits of Internet for women and educate them on how  the Internet can improve their lives and work. Though India has 200mn internet users, only one-third of them are women. Google India aims to help 50 million additional women get online by end of 2014. The communication consists of videos of two kids: short duration ads…

Pink and blue. Barbie dolls and construction sets. The difference is forced on kids right from the time they are born. Parents, aided by popular media, play a role in stereotyping kids in this manner. Girls are perceived (encouraged?) to be interested only in playing with Barbie dolls while boys get to ‘build stuff’ with Lego, as it were. Enter Goldieblox. To quote Adweek, game developer Debbie Sterling designed GoldieBlox to combine young girls’ love…

“What’s the point of making such a costly three and a half minutes long ad film when Google anyways has a 97% market share in search in India?’ asked  @HalfRebel  in a thought provoking article.  He went on to explain that vertical apps on smartphones and tablets may chip away at Google Search’s utility. Going by our own behaviour that makes sense – when a smartphone user wants to search for a movie, chances are he will fire…

An Amnesty International campaign is asking Chileans to demand all nine presidential candidates commit to defending a wide range of human rights — from ensuring freedom of expression at public demonstrations to ending the impunity of dictatorship-era human rights abusers. A print campaign drives Chileans to sign a digital petition so that the presidential candidates commit to uphold human rights in Chile if put in office. While I am not sure how it would ensure…

I had made a short list of iOS-exclusive apps (14, updated to 17) which, on hindsight required a lot more additions. So herewith another list of some beautiful, iOS-only apps: Mustbin: according to Techcrunch, backed by $4.5 million in funding, Mustbin wants to become the go-to service for organizing everything you have that’s important – including passwords, financial data, home and vehicle info, health and medical documents, and more – all securely encrypted in the cloud. Night Sky…

The number of apps on the various app stores is a topic often discussed in tech blogs and even mainstream media. One of the yardsticks of success is the number of apps and up until few years ago, the Apple blogs gloated about the number of apps on the iTunes store. And then Android grew in popularity across the world (that’s an understatement) and it was just a matter of time before the the number of apps on the Google Play store  caught up with that of iOS (current number of Android apps in the market: approx. 875,000- just a wee bit lower than that of iOS).

The print and outdoor ads from The Economist have always generated positive buzz for the brand. The classic red background, clever headline look of these ads are etched in my memory. I have always been a fan of the classic David Abbott created ads  and loved the way they convey a clear, relevant and distinct message with wit and style. The tradition continues with a new campaign for The Economist running in Boston & Philadelphia.…

Google India has released a new campaign to promote what Google’s services, primarily ‘Search’ can do. It is a film that rises above the mundane benefits of search (of merely finding information) and weaves an emotional story that touches you. It elevates search from something which solves an immediate problem or helps find answers to something trivial…to something that has a higher power – to connect people. Agency: Ogilvy India; Production: Chrome Pictures Via. Sandeep…

I stumbled upon this ad for CSI, the popular TV series. TV show promos mostly take the montage route, where clips from the series are strung together. In a departure from that format, the ad dramatises the dedication of the writers of the series. The result is entertaining and makes the series even more endearing. Agency: The Martin Agency;  Production House: MJZ; Director: Rocky Morton The production house, MJZ was voted the Most Awarded Production…

Just a few years ago Outdoor advertising meant just vinyl billboards. And then interactive elements were built into billboards  (see a whole lot of creative outdoor work here) and the category has morphed into anything from ambient ideas to mall activations. In this context, the Cadbury Say It With Chocolate activation, which did the rounds of ad blogs earlier this year is spot on. It has the key ingredients of a great activation and not…
