Snapdeal, John Lewis, agency holiday cards and more: creative ideas of the week

It is said that a majority of advertising is mediocre and plain forgettable. While we all are exposed to hundreds of commercial messaging, only a handful are memorable. Here are a few which caught my eye over the last week: Snapdeal’s Christmas ad, a few ad agency holiday cards and more.

1. Snapdeal: Timmy & Josy’s Christmas Surprise

Casting cute babies or animals in an ad- the trick usually gets a ‘oh, so sweet’ reaction is a surefire way to gain attention. But beyond that the ad has to be relevant and strike a chord. A new video for Snapdeal does all of it thanks mainly to the copywriting. The narration is written in the style of a poem and brings a smile.

Agency: Famous Innovations

It was refreshing to see some ‘craft’ in English copywriting – a rarity in Indian advertising of late. I also liked the fact that there was a subliminal reference to ‘unbox’ – the brand’s theme campaign.

2. Agency holiday cards

When I was working in Trikaya advertising in the early 90s, the agency holiday greeting card was an annual event. A lot of effort used to go behind the creation – it wasn’t just a ‘Best wishes for the new year’ kind of messaging. Every card had an idea and was crafted meticulously. Humour was a common element in such cards. Anyway, I am digressing. In the US it is still a tradition to create holiday cards – except that the format has changed over the years – here’s a nice roundup. Among these, I liked the following:

This video from Cossette pokes fun at the concept of holiday cards itself with hilarious reactions from clients on receiving such cards.

CP+B also pokes fun at holiday cards with typical focus group reactions to a card concept.

3. Sydney Dogs & Cats Home

This print ad beautifully captures how pets ‘see’ us – for them we are their world and the only ‘gift’ they’d want.

Agency: JWT, Sydney

4. John Lewis: #MakeItMoreThoughtful

Smart set of ads from John Lewis giving ‘tips’ on gifting: for example – if giving a wallet as a gift, why not include some money in it? The tips are shared in a landing page and a Pinterest board.

I thought the campaign adds value to the reader as they make you think and motivate action too. Loved it.
