Every day we come across hundreds of commercial messages. But only a handful are noticed and recalled. Here are a few memorable creative ads from last week.
1. Great Western Railway: adventure continues
Last year, GWR launched a campaign which was given a visual treatment like the Famous Five. The idea is taken forward this year too in a new ‘adventure’. The story conveys a product feature -the rail network, in an interesting manner.
Agency: adam&eveDDB
2. Honda Civic: ‘ where different takes you’
When an automobile’s marketing is based on its looks, chances are execution matters as there isn’t much of a product story going. In this visually engaging film, clever typography delivers the goods to make it a riveting watch.
Agency: Wieden+Kennedy, London
3. One Show: what a difference a pencil makes
In the ad industry, ‘award winners’ are considered a superior lot as compared to other creative folks – not necessarily a good thing. A couple of ads calling for entries to the One Show bring this attitude alive with humour.
Agency: Zulu Alpha Kilo
4. Burger King: flame grilled
‘A good thing can be made great with XYZ’ kind of comparison is a variation of the ‘before-after’ theme in advertising. Here is a campaign dramatizing the benefits of ‘flame grilled’ in a humorous way.

Agency: Buzzman, France
5. Department of Education: every lesson shapes a life
Teachers have a profound effect on students. Each one of us have our favourite teacher who left a lasting impression in us and played a role in shaping who we are today. A new spot urging people to apply for a teacher’s job in the UK manages the difficult task of touching a potential applicant, the parents and the children. Loved it.
Agency: Havas
6. Virgin Trains: print ads in the UK
Tactical ads announcing new service features in a train network can be boring. But not these. Loved the take on a common interview question and the one announcing on-board entertainment.
